Glossary

Some techy webdesign terms explained, hope it helps. Simple terms nothing crazy.

Front end – this is the publicly viewable part of the website

Back end – the hidden behind the scenes workings of the website

Server – this is a computer(s) in a big building somewhere which holds the data of the website which is “served” to the internet

WordPress – some software which is uploaded to the server that is used to build a website (this site uses WordPress)

CMS – Content Management System, WordPress is a CMS platform

Plugins – software apps that add features to WordPress

HTML – the basic code that is used to construct web pages

CSS – Cascading Style Sheet, a file in the website that controls fonts and layout

Web Host – a company that owns servers on which the websites sit

Domain Name – the name up the top there in the address bar ie “GreylizardWebdesign.co.uk”

SEO – Search Engine Optimisation

Sitemap – a list of pages shown to search engines to help indexing on same

Responsive – means the site will reform to view on any size screen
